Informazioni sulla zona di Gozo

Xewkija

In the middle of the journey from Ghajnsielem to Victoria, you will find the town of Xewkija. It is a substantial community. The name Xewkija comes from the Arabic and Maltese term for thistle, and it most likely referred to an area that was covered in a dense population of thistles. It is difficult to picture what Xewkija looked like before all of the changes that have taken place there since then. It was the first parish to break away from Victoria in 1678, and today it is known as Gozo's oldest hamlet. This was conceivable at the time since Xewkija was able to maintain itself due to the fertile feeds that were located all around it, it was well-guarded by two towers, and the village was situated close enough to the Citadel.

This autonomy resulted in rapid development of Xewkija, which can be seen even today in the presence of the Gozo Section of the University of Malta, the offices of the Employment and Training Corporation, a sizable Industrial Estate, the Government Farm, the Gozo Stadium, and two important Cemeteries. However, the most well-known sight in all of Xewkija is unquestionably the town's magnificent church. The largest building on the island of Gozo is the Rotunda (1695-1734), which was constructed in honor of John the Baptist. In the year 1738, a bell tower was constructed, and in the year 1830, the dome was put into place.

The church that is commonly known as Tal-Madonna tal-Hniena, also known as the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, is really dedicated to Saint Bartholomew and has been documented as being in existence since the year 1397. As you make your way around Xewkija, keep your eyes peeled for the historic niches that may be found in the house facades and on the corners of the streets.
