Qala

The village of Il-Qala is located in the most eastern part of Gozo. It has a long history of settlement dating back to the earliest times, although the present settlement dates back to the second half of the seventeenth century. Il-Qala is known for its breathtaking views of the sea, which extend all the way to Comino and Malta. Il-Qala, which literally translates to "port," most likely alludes to the neighboring bay and landing stage of Odoq ir-Rummien, which is now a popular swimming location.

Both the il-Qala Belvedere and the modest courtyard in front of the tiny church known as Il-Madonna tal-Blat provide visitors with stunning vantage points from which to take in the surrounding landscape (Saint Mary of the Rocks).

The residents of the nearby island of Comino were able to observe Holy Mass from across the sea when the weather was too stormy for a priest to cross to them, according to the narrative that is associated with the construction of this church, which faces Comino. The coastline of il-Qala is mostly rocky and unsheltered, with the exception of a few coves and bays, such as the well-known Hondoq Ir-Rummien. There are a number of caves that are worth exploring, the most beautiful of which is called Gar Minka and can only be reached by boat.
