Ghajnsielem

Ghajnsielem, the first Gozitan settlement you will see after disembarking from the ferry at Mgarr Harbour, has numerous noteworthy landmarks.

Ghajnsielem meaning the Spring of Peace, but it may also refer to Selim, a Turkish naval commander who refilled his ship's water supply from it every time he passed by the islands. Grand Master Perellos turned the community's namesake spring into a wash-house in 1700, but in 1954, the historic wash-house was dismantled and the spring was entombed to expand the village center.

Mgarr Harbour and fishing village start every Ghajnsielem visit. Visit the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes to see the waterfront at sunrise or sunset. The 18th-century Fort Chambray on the left side overlooks Gozo's southern cliffs and Xatt l-Amar Bay on the Comino Channel. From here, visitors can travel the narrow winding road to the quiet bay of Xatt l-Ahmar or see the Lombard-Gothic Parish Church of Our Lady of Loreto in the village center. The historic parish church and the mystery "Pjazza tad-Dehra" (square of the apparition), where Our Lady allegedly spoke to a local shepherd named Anglu Grech, are nearby.

Since Ghajnsielem was too far from Nadur Parish, this apparition led to the first statue in a niche where villagers could pray. The first tiny chapel was built in 1810, and larger buildings were built subsequently to accommodate a rising population. The village became an autonomous parish in 1855, and the current parish church was consecrated in 1978. Ghajnsielem holds 10 religious procession events each year. Today, NGOs, clubs, and organizations drive communal life.

Ghajnsielem was one of the last villages to form, despite evidence of early use of the spring and nearby caves and coves. The site was dangerously close to a pirate landing spot, and both sides knew about the fresh water springs. From the middle of the seventeenth century, when Grazes Tower later Fort Chambray provided some security and Santa Marija Tower on Comino's mid-channel island made the Gozo-Malta waterway safer, the anxiety gradually faded and the first farmhouses were built near the village's namesake spring.

Eleven Ghajnsielem shelters and four Fort Chambray shelters were dug between 1940 and 1942. Gozo's late sixties Mgarr harbour expansion brought Ghajnsielem riches after the war. Many bars and restaurants now serve visitors to Ghajnsielem, one of Malta and Gozo's most picturesque squares.
