Gozo Area Information

Marsalforn

Zebbug sits on a plateau between Gozo's tallest hills, Ta' Abram and Iz-Zebbug, in the north. Zebbug, Maltese for olive tree, is likely named from the area's abundant wild olives.

A Bronze Age habitation on Ta' Kuljat, a flat-topped hill, dates Zebbug to 1500–700 BC. From there to Qbajjar, an inlet near Marsalforn, are several Punic graves (700-218 BC). From 1282, a settlement formed, and in 1688 it was recognized as an autonomous Parish with a Church dedicated to Santa Marija, the Assumption. The adjacent beach resort of Marsalforn features a modest church dedicated to Saint Paul Shipwrecked, who is said to have left the Maltese islands for Sicily and Rome. The feast is observed on February 10.

The village's traditional culture shows its long history. This is evident in the villagers' deep devotion to their Church, the careful maintenance of the street niches that house holy figures to watch over the village streets, the local clubs like the Bocci Club, Shooting Range, and Band Club, which are the heart of community social interaction, and the Zebbugin's high-quality traditional crafts like lace, basket weaving, and woollen blankets. Zebbug was known for agriculture, wool, and weaving until recently.

Marsalforn, a prominent fishing village and tourist resort in the North West of Gozo, is part of Zebbug. The name refers to the harbour (Marsa) and either the vessels that would shelter there (Lifurna) or the many sea caves ('l Forna) in the vicinity. Marsalforn became a quiet fishing village after Mgarr Harbour developed. Marsalforn is one of Gozo's main attractions, however overdevelopment of holiday apartments and eateries has changed it.

Marsalforn's gorgeous blue seas and diving opportunities draw Gozitans and tourists by the dozens. The coast of Marsalforn is gorgeous with various bays and bathing areas. From Xwejni to Wied il-Ghasri, hundreds of salt pans carved into soft limestone are filled with sea water before summer to collect salt left behind by the scorching sun.

The 'Fortina tal-Qolla l-Bajda' (Qbajjar Tower), built in 1716, is the final of a line of fortifications built around Marsalforn harbor to protect it and the rest of the island from invaders. It is located on the promontory between Qbajjar and Xwejni. The majestic statue of Christ the Saviour on Merzuq Slope, guarding the island with extended arms, is the area's most prominent feature.
