Gozo Area Information
Xaghra
Gozo's major attractions—the prehistoric Ggantija temples and Ramla l-Hamra sandy bay—are in Xaghra. Typical Gozitan square, historic streets, and countryside... remain here. The lovely Toy Museum is another surprise.
Gozo's oldest settlement was Xaghra (pronounced Shara). Gozitan-style winding streets make the village charming. Xaghra has more.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site Ggantija Temples, where the Goddess was worshipped, must be seen. The Guinness Book of Records calls these remarkable megaliths "the oldest free standing buildings in the world" at circa 3600 BC. The tal-Qacca Hypogeum, Gozo Stone Circle, Santa Verna Temple, in-Nuffara, caves, and other prehistoric sites are nearby.
Visit Ta' Kola windmill for a more recent time travel. It was built in 1725 and restored into a folklore museum in the miller's quarters to honor hardworking millers.
Visit Edwin and Susan Lowe's Pomskizillious Museum to relive your childhood. Edward Lear, who visited Gozo in 1866, named it.
Visit Ninu's Cave and Xerri's Grotto for stalactites and stalagmites. Since they were found drilling wells, both are in private residences near the village square!
Visit Calypso's Cave to see the Mediterranean blue and Ramla bay's crimson sand. In the Odyssey, Ulysses was enchanted by Calypso, a nymph who lived in this cave, and kept on her lovely island for seven years. Xaghra's many attractions will entice visitors!
