Gozo Area Information
Ghajnsielem
Many of the prominent landmarks of Ghajnsielem, the first Gozitan settlement you will see when you disembark from the ferry at Mgarr Harbour and travel into the heart of Gozo, will be visible even as you enter Mgarr Harbour. Ghajnsielem meaning "Peace Spring," while the name is also supposed to refer to the Spring of Selim, a Turkish Navel Commander who refreshed his ship's water supply from it whenever he passed by the islands. Grand Master Perellos converted the natural water spring that inspired the village's name into a wash-house in 1700, but regrettably, in 1954, the historic wash-house was dismantled and the spring spring that inspired the hamlet's name was entombed in order to expand the village square. A trip to Ghajnsielem must begin with a visit to Mgarr Harbour and the fishing community. Head to the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes for spectacular views of the harbor, especially at sunrise and sunset. The 18th century Fort Chambray on the left side provides breathtaking views of Gozo's southern cliffs and Xatt l-Amar Bay, which overlooks the Comino Channel. From here, you can travel the narrow winding road to the quiet bay of Xatt l-Ahmar, or you can head to the village center to see the Lombard-Gothic Parish Church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto. The historic parish church and the enigmatic 'Pjazza tad-Dehra' (square of the apparition), where Our Lady is said to have talked to a local shepherd named Anglu Grech, are located nearby. This apparition was what prompted the initial installation of a statue contained in a niche where villagers would meet in prayer because the Nadur Parish, of which Ghajnsielem was previously a member, was too far away. The first tiny chapel was built in 1810, and larger buildings were later built to accommodate a rising population, such that the settlement was formed as an independent parish in 1855, and the new parish church we know today was consecrated in 1978. Ghajnsielem's religiosity and religious culture are still quite strong, with no less than 10 procession events taking place each year. To this day, several NGOs, clubs, and organizations serve as the heart and soul of communal life.
