Gozo Area Information
Xaghra
One of the first parts of Gozo to be settled was Xaghra (pronounced Shara). The village is small and charming, with meandering streets that are typical of Gozita. However, Xaghra has a lot more to offer.
A trip to the Ggantija Temples, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are thought to have served as the Goddess' place of worship, is an absolute necessity. These magnificent megaliths, which have an estimated 3600 BC construction date, are listed in the Guinness Book of Records as "the oldest free standing buildings in the world." Other significant prehistoric sites nearby include the tal-Qacca Hypogeum, the Gozo Stone Circle, Santa Verna Temple, in-Nuffara, several caves, and more.
Visit the adjacent Ta' Kola windmill for a less time-traveling excursion. It was built in 1725, and since it has been refurbished and turned into a folklore museum with exhibits in the miller's quarters, it stands as a tribute to the diligent millers of the past and present.
Visit the Pomskizillious Museum, a sizable private collection of toys from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, owned by Edwin and Susan Lowe, if you're in the mood to relive your youth. Its name is taken from Edward Lear's fantastical animals and meaningless phrases, which he wrote after visiting Gozo in 1866.
For a display of stalactites and stalagmites, visit Ninu's Cave and Xerri's Grotto underground. Since they were found while trying to dig wells, both are located in private homes not far from the village square!
Visit Calypso's Cave for a breath-taking view of Ramla Bay, known for its vivid orange (red) sand, and the Mediterranean Sea. The Odyssey, an ancient Greek classic, claims that Calypso, a nymph who dwelt in this cave, charmed Ulysses and kept him on her lovely island for seven years. Any visitor to Xaghra could be quickly charmed by the range of attractions there to do the same!
